Table of Contents

So there are a lot of topics I'd like to cover here.  I thought that by making a list, it might help me do two things- 1). It would be a Table of Contents to any readers, plus 2). It would act as a checklist I can cross items off as I get them out.  So , in no particular order, here are a few topics of discussion I'd like to delve into:
1). Why I Run
2). Weight Loss- Fails & Wins
3). Training Plans
4). Race Bucket List
5). Race Recaps
6). Mothering & Training
7). Pregnancy & Running
8). Top Recipes
9). Why the Title "Practically Running"
10). Family Fun
11). Keeping the Peace- Finding a Balance
12). Raising Money Through Running
13). TBD

Intro to Practically Running

Well, how about a little about me...  My name is Janell.  I'm in my early 30s.  I'm married with two adorable kiddos.  I work as a nurse.  My new found favorite hobby is running.  My BFF is a blogger so I thought I might give it a try.  She's met a lot of blogger friends who have become real life friends.  If nothing else, this may be a good outlet for me, a place to store my thoughts.

So a little about my running.... I can't remember the date of my first 5k, but I do remember I was ill-prepared.  I was just out of college and I guess I thought I wouldn't need much training.  I bet you those 3.1 miles took me over 40 minutes.  Fast forward to 2008.  I moved away from home with my hubs to NC and have become fast friends with my current BFF.  We were both there as U.S. Coast Guard wives and both held an admiration for runners.  So we registered for the Oak Island 10k and began training, or what we thought at the time was training.  I can't speak for my BFF, but I felt like I barely survived that race!  However, it was still a great experience and I think deep down we were hooked.  We continued to run, training for other races, just 5ks, and we made a ton of great memories and started to become more fit in the process.  Then I announced my first pregnancy around Thanksgiving that year.

I gave birth to my sweet boy in July '09.  I did run two 5ks during my pregnancy with him.  Then I ran one about a month after his birth, and it was tough.  So running became something I didn't do quite as often as before.  When my sweet boy was nine months old I found out I was pregnant again!  And my darling girl was born in January '11.  I think I let running go completely by the wayside.  It wasn't until I was planning her first birthday party that I realized I was still was carrying 36 pounds of baby weight around, plus and additional 15 or so that I was carrying around before I started having babies.  Seeing my size 14 self in the mirror made me sad, and I had very low self-confidence.  I started using and laced up my running sneakers.  I don't know what clicked this time that never clicked before, but something finally fell into place and the whole weight loss and training thing finally made sense.  Since that fateful moment in January 2012 I have gone from a size 14, 186 pound sad girl, to a size 6, 136 pound proud girl with six races under her belt for the year, including a 4:24:01 marathon!

Life these days is about finding balance.  Balance between my wants and needs, and my family's needs and wants.  I think the main purpose of my blog is to figure out how to make practical choices so we can all be happy.  It sure isn't easy every day, but I think I'm beginning to figure it out.
